MacGurus Burly SCSI Enclosures!
These are our favorite SCSI enclosures!
All-steel construction for durability and superior heat-dissipation, in a variety of designs for maximum flexibility.
Buy the enclosure you require for your exact application!
These enclosures include the beefiest power supplies on the market--a real requirement
for generating the extra torque needed to spin up multiple 10,000
rpm or even 15,000 rpm drives. The 2 Bay Burly ships with an 80 watt power
supply and both the 4 and 8 bay Burlys ship with a powerful 300 watt
power supply giving plenty of available headroom to maintain power levels for
any drives.
You may replace the included PVC flat ribbon cabling with Granite's
state-of-the-art cabling, listed below
in 68-pin Ultra3 LVD. For Ultra3, Ultra160, Ultra320 MacGurus recommends Granite
part number GD7031 for 2 drives, the GD2682 for 4 drives and the GD1005 for 8
drives
in Thermal
Plastic
Olefin
(TPO).
You're
wondering
whether
you
really, really need to use TPO cables? Perhaps not. But if you are
pushing the edge of the performance envelope,
and building a zero-tolerance system that will rip the pants right off you and work
right when the deadlines loom, you will appreciate our including pre-built TPO
cable pricing below. The way we see it, you only go around once, and there's
no point in hobbling 10k or 15K rpm Cheetahs with crappy cables. How much
is your data worth, anyway?
We like these enclosures for a number of reasons, but the primary reason is
because they work really well. You may be able to buy prettier enclosures, if
you
buy
more expensive pre-built units that skimp on internal components you can't
see, but there's no mystery to these enclosures, and installing Granite internal
TPO Ultra3 cables ensures that you will have nothing but the absolute best
in SCSI hardware on your desktop. The Granite cables are designed
to work with these enclosures, these enclosures are readily modifiable and
easily customized, and we have never found enclosures with superior power supplies
or better heat dissipation characteristics. Need enclosures that can handle
even multiple hot 15,000 rpm drives? There's no cheap plastic stuff in these
burly babies. With all-steel construction, and optional UltiMate Drive Cooler
with front fans,
these
enclosures are even perfect for use with the fastest drives on Earth, Seagate's
screaming family of
Cheetah drives.
These enclosures also excel in performance when paired with the Granite GD1515
Active
Terminators.
We think you'll like them, too.

MacGurus Burly SCSI
Enclosures
The Burly 2 Bay Enclosures are 5.25-inch enclosures, and require
3.5-inch to 5.25-inch drive brackets to accommodate modern 3.5-inch drives, available
below. The Burly2-ultra includes 15-ID switches
and 68-pin internal PVC cabling. For top quality performance use of Granite
TPO Ultra320 cables is recommended. Granite part number GD6282 is appropriate
for a single drive, while part number GD7031 can handle two drives. The GD1515
is the correct Terminator for all enclosure cables.
The Burly2-ultra is appropriate for one or two
hot drives, assuming two Ultimate Drive Coolers are installed in the front bezel
stations. The fan kits constitute
a fan array which pulls a surprising amount of air into
the enclosure, where it can be swept out over the drives by the beefy fan in
the backplane. The windtunnel effect is very effective. With cooler running
drives you can also use the optional 3.5 inch to 5.25 inch bracket kits and
rely on the built in cooling fans.
The Burly 4 Bay Enclosures can handle either one or two buses, with
a total of four external connector ports on the backplane. Cabling for dual-bus
use,
order a pair of GD7031 pre-built cables and a pair of GD1515 Terminators. For
a
single
bus,
order
GD2682
four
drive
cable and one GD1515 Terminator.
The same paradigm applies as above: the Burly4-ultra includes 68-pin PVC internal
cabling and 15-ID switches (four of them, one per drive bay), Again, drive
brackets are required for 3.5-inch drives. For hot drives, however, it
is best to use four Ultimate Drive Coolers.
The Burly 8 Bay Enclosures can also handle dual buses. For eight internal 68 pin devices,
order the Burly8-ultra with one GD1005 TPO internal ribbon cable, listed below.
The maximum number of SCSI devices addressable on an LVD bus
is fifteen, including addresses 0 through 6 (7 is reserved for the host)8 through
15.
For dual internal 68-pin buses, order a pair of 4 drive GD2682 TPO cables. You
will need two GD1515 Terminators.
The Burly8-ultra has one beefy 300w power supply.
Like all other power supplies in
the Burly line,
these are switchable for either domestic US 120v or overseas 230v power sources.
These all-steel Burly Enclosures are quite heavy. We recommend planning ahead, and shipping
them via UPS Ground whenever possible purely due to the cost of shipping heavy items.
They are extremely durable. You need not fear that they may not survive the journey to your desktop. You can stand on them, should you choose to do so.

SCSI Enclosure Accessories
for 5.25" Enclosures
Ultimate
Hard Drive Cooler
Our flagship unit is the Ultimate Hard Drive Cooler. This unit accepts
3.5-inch third-height drives, and adapts them to fit into ATX standard 5.25-inch
drive bays.
They also fit in Apple computers like the Power Macintosh 9600, 8600,
or G3 Minitower using the Kansas enclosure, assuming you are installing them
into the 5.25-inch drive bays under the CD-ROM, but you cannot use the included
plastic bezel. It's no real loss, as the bezel serves nothing but a cosmetic
purpose (and not much of one, in our opinion), and the real guts of the Cooler
are the dual 40x40x20mm fans, and the dual-layered heatsink.
The 4500 rpm fans in this unit have an impressive 50cfm airflow
rating, and are whisper-quiet at 24dbA. Installation is rudimentary, requiring
you to tighten four screws in the heatsink, position your drive in the unit,
and secure it using the included screw set to the side-mounted drive brackets.
You then release tension on the heatsink screws, settling the heatsink into
close contact with the top of your drive. The assembled unit, including your
drive, slides into an open drive bay, where you secure it in place to a drive
tray or your chassis with the included screws.
Simple, yet very effective.
The kit includes a pass-thru Molex Y-power connector, the Cooler
unit itself, a screw set, and instructions. It is warranted for five
years.
We'll say that again. (That's how good the fans in this kit are
built and rated).
Warranted for five years.
These units also fit, and gorgeously so, in standard 5.25-inch drive enclosures
like our own Burly Enclosures.
Note: MacGurus strongly recommends the use of as many Ultimate Drive Coolers
as
possible
when
building enclosures using Seagate Cheetah or Quantum Atlas drives. Simply
consider
how many bays your enclosure has, and then buy that many fans. This will not
only present a nice cosmetic appearance--it will give you the optimum in cooling,
creating a wind-tunnel effect within the enclosure, keeping those beastly drives
nice and chilled.
